Paths of Reflection: Photography and Contemplative Walks
Escape to the tranquil paths of Montesquieu
Welcome to Unfolding Conversations, the newsletter of littlefrenchretreat.com and TamsinJardinier.com - for restorative practices, creative inspiration, and a mindful approach to life and work…
Drawn by the promise of sunshine and silence, yet inexperienced in the art of true contemplation, I came to realise that my life in France, was not confined to the practice of yoga solely happening on the mat and that this way of being became a practice that weaved itself through every aspect, connecting my inner and outer worlds.
For thirteen years, I have walked the paths of Montesquieu with my camera, both companions to my solitude, support, and safekeeping. They have guided me, providing a framework to see through and beyond the vast emptiness and uncertainty that stretched before me as I began a life here—a place the locals call the lost world, where hardly a soul is seen.
My life is solitary, quiet, and deeply reflective. Each day unfolds through a rhythm of rituals and routines, not as mere tasks but as sacred acts that form a cohesive whole. These "practices for living" create a container for presence and self-awareness, nourishing me with what I need to hold within myself, and in turn, to hold space for others.
Capturing these moments of quiet inspiration through my lens, roots me in the rhythms of the seasons, observing fields fall fallow or the light circling the hill. Sometimes, the looking and belonging come with ease, while other times, I wish to escape the deafening silence and monotony, questioning if this time spent in contemplation is worth it. And then comes a breakthrough to a deeper, more connected, creative space.
With patience and time, these paths have become part of me, marked by my footprints and images, to offer an experience I enjoy sharing—inviting others to pause, reflect, and reconnect with their sense of place and purpose, whether through my photography or in person during retreats…

5 Tips for a Mindful Photowalk
A photowalk is more than just capturing images; it’s an opportunity to slow down, reconnect with yourself, and see the world with fresh eyes. These tips will help you infuse mindfulness into your walk.
1. Set an Intention
Before you begin, take a moment to pause and ground yourself. What do you want to focus on during your walk? It could be noticing light and shadow, capturing textures, or simply enjoying a sense of calm. Let this intention guide your observations.
2. Engage Your Senses
Photography isn’t just about what you see—it’s about how you experience the world and the capturing moments. Take time to listen to the sounds around you, feel the texture of the ground underfoot, and breathe in the scents of your environment. This sensory awareness will deepen your connection to the moment and inspire unique shots.
3. Slow Down and Look Closely
Mindfulness is about being present, and so is good photography. Instead of rushing from one spot to another, linger in a single area. Notice the small details—a raindrop on a leaf, the play of light on a wall, or the subtle patterns in nature. Some of the most powerful images come from quiet observation.
4. Experiment with Perspective
See the world differently by changing your viewpoint. Crouch low to the ground, look up at the sky, or frame your subject through tree branches or windows. Playing with perspective not only enriches your photography but also helps you break free from habitual ways of seeing.
5. Take Breaks to Simply Be
Put your camera aside now and then to fully immerse yourself in your surroundings. Take a few deep breaths, enjoy the quiet, and allow yourself to simply be. These moments of stillness often lead to new inspiration and fresh ways of seeing.
Mindful photowalks blend creativity and contemplation, helping you cultivate presence and awareness. Whether you walk familiar paths or explore new terrain, allow the journey itself to be as meaningful as the images you capture.
Until next time
Much love,
