Have you considered the seeds you are planting for this new year?
What will nourish and sustain you?
What do you wish to grow that inspires you?
Winter's touch left its mark on a garden, unloved and empty, only to be filled with the arrival of the changing season's rain and warmer days as rapid new growth, wrapped its arms around her in an unruly swath of goose grass, spreading over flower beds and across the woodland floor.
I watched on from the inside out, waiting for the right moment when the last frosts had passed and the sense of certainty, or as certain as one can be, had arrived. Now the sacks of gathered fallen leaves and cut branches could be laid at the base of the raised beds to nourish the soil, whilst unwanted weeds are gathered for medicinal purposes or tamed, burned, and cleared to make space for plants supported by the right conditions for their growth.
With just enough raised beds to manage and no more, seeds are sewn that are a mix of easy wins and sure bets to encourage a fledging gardener to learn and enjoy, rather than drown in overwhelm. And alongside, ancient varieties of vegetables are planted to inspire new recipes along the way.
Some flowerbeds will vanish, turfed over, and laid to rest. Terrace pot plants will be left empty and not reinstated, so that time spent this year can be focused on what’s necessary and enjoyable.
As nature happens on time here, so too does the intention to follow her rhythms and go with the flow rather than against it.
