Gianni Notarianni's journey embodies the courage it takes to navigate life's uncertainty. After twenty-five years immersed in a spiritual community as a monk and priest, he embarked on a transformative journey into the unknown, guided by gentle determination as he managed his commitment to others with his changing needs…
Hello all,
This week I am in conversation with Gianni Notarianni, a friend, painter and former priest.
Throughout life, pivotal moments call us to embrace change or risk suppressing a part of us which wishes to be seen. Gianni's story highlights this, spanning several stages marked by introspection and profound transition.
His journey began with subtle signs, leading to a leap of faith and a two-year transition supported by the Augustinian community with whom he lived, as he questioned his vocation, adjusting to the practical demands of independent life, from mundane yet essential tasks like opening a bank account, to the profound inner dialogue, which paved the way for his transformation.
Gianni's journey beautifully illustrates the crossover between art, faith, and personal growth. Included in this post are: our conversation, bullet points on the topics we discuss and a set of questions to bear in mind when seeking to prioritise your passion.
NB. includes edits and cuts short at the end due to internet issues
Here are the key points we discuss:
Juggling two vocations simultaneously: Being a priest and member of a community while pursuing a passion for painting and studying his master’s at The Slade School of Fine Art, undoubtedly presented a unique set of challenges and complexities.
The Austin Forum: The establishment of the Austin Forum artist group highlights Gianni's vision to bridge the gap between art and spirituality within the community. An initiative to foster inclusivity and dialogue within the church, challenging some of the narrow interpretations of tradition and inviting exploration.
St. Augustine’s Church Renovation: Gianni's role in collaboration with Architect Roz Barr for the renovation project embodied the fusion of creativity and practicality, ultimately earning recognition with a RIBA award.
Transition from Priesthood: Gianni's realisation that his calling to become a painter was greater than would be possible should he stay with his role as a priest, speaks to the complexity of personal growth and self-discovery. With community support, he was helped to shape his decision by embarking on a transformative two-year transitional program.
Rediscovery in Canada: Gianni's retreat in Canada catalysed rediscovering his passion for painting amidst the serenity of nature. This pivotal chapter marked a turning point in his artistic journey, paving the way for a new beginning.
Navigating the Pandemic: Against the backdrop of global uncertainty, Gianni's decision to share his artworks on Instagram led to unexpected inquiries and opportunities. This newfound recognition provided a sense of hope and possibility amid chaos.
Life as a Full-time Painter: From that moment onwards, Gianni embraced his identity as a full-time painter with courage and conviction. His journey is an inspiration for others seeking to pursue their passions and embrace the transformative power of creative expression.
The importance of Beauty: Seeing art as a source of hope, inspiration, and reflection, in times of uncertainty and upheaval, to have the unique ability to provide hope within the human spirit.
The concept of Tradition: As a perennial eternal truth, accessible to everyone, when viewed as rooted in the spiritual and connected to the essence of the human spirit, becomes a source of life-giving. In this context, tradition is not static or rigid but rather dynamic and evolving, reflecting the ever-changing nature of existence to create the new.
Reflection: His art serves as a source of contemplation both in the reflection, thinking and observation as the doer, and also in the calm, structured detail that creates a peaceful focal point for the viewer.
Spiritual Practice: meditation is a foundational practice for cultivating self-awareness, managing life effectively, and understanding oneself as an artist.
Contemplation: Going beyond messaging to focus the mind on stillness.
Gianni's story is one of thoughtful determination, self-discovery, and the pursuit of authenticity. Through his journey, we are reminded of the potential for growth and renewal that emerges when we listen to the whispers of our hearts and embrace the unknown with open arms.

These are questions to consider when seeking to encourage and prioritise your passion:
Creating Time for Passion: Look at your daily schedule and identify tasks or commitments that could be delegated or streamlined to free up time for your passion. Consider outsourcing non-essential tasks or negotiating with others to redistribute responsibilities.
Identifying Unmet Needs: Reflect on areas of your life where your needs for creative expression, personal growth, or fulfilment are not being met. Phrase your concerns in a way that emphasises the benefits of pursuing your passion, such as how it could enhance your well-being or contribute to your overall fulfilment.
Joining Supportive Groups or Organisations: Seek out groups, clubs, or organisations related to your passion where you can connect with like-minded individuals, share ideas, and receive support. Building a community around your passion can provide encouragement, inspiration, and resources.
Exploring Sabbaticals or Residencies: Investigate opportunities for sabbaticals, extended breaks, or artist residencies that would allow you dedicated time and space to focus on your passion. Research programs, grants, or fellowships that align with your interests and goals.
Sharing Your Work: Explore avenues for sharing your work with a wider audience, such as through exhibitions, online platforms, social media, or community events. Engage with local galleries, art shows, or creative collectives to showcase your creations and connect with potential collaborators or patrons.
Structuring the Next Phase: Assess the support you need to structure the next phase of your life and pursue your passion more fully. This may involve seeking mentorship, professional guidance, or financial resources to help you set goals, develop a plan, and navigate potential challenges along the way.
By addressing these questions thoughtfully and proactively, you can create a supportive environment that nurtures your passion and enables you to fully embrace and explore your needs.
It was a pleasure exploring Gianni's journey.
